What is a Podiatrist?

inoffice1A podiatrist is a doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM), also known as a podiatric physician or surgeon.

Podiatrists diagnose and treat conditions of the foot and ankle. Podiatrists, such as Dr. Thomas, are the most qualified doctors to care for your feet. They complete four years of training in a podiatric medical school and three years of hospital residency training, after earning an undergraduate degree.

Podiatrists earn board certification with advanced training, clinical experience, and by ultimately taking an exam. The American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery and the American Board of Podiatric Medicine are the certifying boards for the field. Podiatrists are required to take state and national exams, as well as be licensed by the state in which they practice. Dr. Thomas holds the highest level of certification and licensing in the North Carolina.

Podiatrists play an important role in your overall health care as they:

  • Consult with patients and other physicians on how to prevent foot problems.
  • Diagnose and treat tumors, ulcers, fractures, skin and nail diseases, and deformities.
  • Perform surgeries to correct or remedy such problems as bunions, clawtoes, fractures, hammertoes, infections, ruptured Achilles, and other ligaments and tendons.
  • Perform diagnostic procedures such as ultrasound, gait analysis, x-ray and lab tests.
  • Prescribe and fit patients with custom orthotic inserts that correct walking patterns.
  • Treat conditions such as: bone disorders, bunions, corns, calluses, cysts, heel spurs, infections, ingrown nails, and plantar fasciitis.
  • Evaluate and treat foot and ankle disorders in children.
  • Assess and treat injuries to the foot and ankle.
  • Treat patients with diabetic or gout foot conditions.

Dr. Thomas trained in a highly regarded residency program in Atlanta, GA, and is a specialist who should be a part of your healthcare team to provide you with his expertise in foot and ankle health.
